Theroux was born in Washington, D.C. His mother, Phyllis Theroux (born Grissim), is a journalist and author, and his father, Eugene Theroux, is a corporate lawyer of French Canadian descent. Justin Theroux is the nephew of the travel writer and novelist Paul Theroux, novelist and poet Alexander Theroux, and novelist/educator Joseph Theroux and the cousin to British journalists and documentary makers Louis Theroux and Marcel Theroux.
